Project 1: Case Study and Documentation of Building

This is a group project to perform a case study on the building services systems installed in a building. In a group of 6, we are required to choose a building with minimum 4 floors to research about its services. We've choose SS2 Mall to research on and site visit has been conducted with the assist of the Services Manager of SS2 Mall.

Objectives

1. To introduce students to the basic principles, process and equipment of various building services systems through real life project (experiential learning).
2. To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building.
3. To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems
4. To develop students’ understanding and familiarity on the drawing conventions and standards for different building services systems.

Learning Outcome

1. Identify and understand relevant information related to water and electrical supply, sewerage, mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning as well as fire protection systems.
2. Understand how each building services functions including the connections and position of different parts equipment.
3. Understand and explain the principles and systems as well as space implications and regulations related to different building services.

Through this project, I've know how the services work in real life including its function, placement and importance. Besides, I've also understand that building services are the life source to a building as different services serve different part of the building so that to run the whole building.

Project 2: Application of Building Services

This is an individual project to apply basic building services systems into semester 2 design project. We have to use our Architectural Design Studio 2 final project to put in services into the building that we've designed.

To have understanding of building services by proposing and designing the most appropriate systems for the building which include:
1. electrical supply system (including split unit air-cond)
2. cold water and hot water supply system
3. sewerage and sanitary system
4. drainage system.

Objectives

1. To develop students understanding and knowledge of building services systems in design and construction.
2. To apply appropriate building services system and solution for a specific design.
3. To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicability of specific building services systems in the design in response to practical considerations.
4. To develop students’ ability to resolve issues related to specific building services systems.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify relevant information related to water supply, liquid waste disposal, mechanical air-conditioning, fire safety and vertical transportation system.
2. Describe the planning of building services within the total design and construction process.
3. Describe the installation of building services within the total design and construction process.

After doing this project, I've know how the services work in real life including its function, placement and importance. Besides, I've also know how to apply building services to my own building follow its design and also resolve the issue that related to the application of the building services.
