Project 1 (a) My home my space

Building material is any material which is used for a construction purpose. This assignment is designed as an basic introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. We are required to identify 5 materials that are being used in any space in our home such as kitchen, study room, bedroom and living room. Then we are then required to do a A2 size catalog of these materials and describe them through photographs, sketches and some descriptions in soft copy.

Learning outcomes

  • Recognize different types of materials and their properties.
  • Identify and describe the findings.

By doing this assignment  I realise that there are uncountable building materials around us in our daily life. By the way, I've learnt some basic ways to identify different materials used for construction, finishes and furnishings. Besides, I'm able describe the general usage of materials that I've choosen for this assignment and use the information found to produce a proper documentation.

Project 1 (b) Materiality of SPACE: An experiential exploration

In a group of 5 members, we are required to choose a commercial or a residential building which able to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module. This assignment is divided on to two task which are Task A (Group) and Task B (Individual).

Learning outcomes

  • Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties
  • Identification of various types of building material (Finishes and Structural)
  • Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building.
  • Understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factorsoccupancy, concept, climate
  • Acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design
  • Understanding of application/ installation of material as finish and structural material (simple construction)

Task A (Group)

In a group of 5, we have choose NZX Commercial Centre (Niuzexui) in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya as our site to do research on. It is a freehold property developed by SM Land Group. Completed in the year 2007, there are a total of 182 units spread across a space of 19 acres of land. We are required to produce a brief introduction of the selected building and reason for selecting that particular space as our site, a mood board, draw out plans, sections and elevations to indicate and explain the materials found. Besides, the application of materials and the physical and chemical properties of these materials to explain the suitability of material used in context to concept, occupancy and climate on 3 A2 board.

Task B (Individual)

For the individual task, we are required to produce a experiential analysis of material space on the influence of selection of materials and also the scale, proportion and installation of building materials on only one A2 board.

Project 2 Integration : Material Specification

In this project, we are asked to focus on documentation and analysis of the existing materials in building of different concept, functional use and site context architectural space, this assignment will focus on the challenging task of selecting materials for Architectural Design Studio 1.

Learning outcomes

  • Apply the understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical properties of design, building or space.
  • Exploration and identification of various types of building materials and technology.
  • Understand the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building, environment and so on.
  • Produce drawings to visualize the architectural effects of proposed materials.
